Skiing in Megeve 1965

Megeve is a wonderfully quaint village in the French Alps, with first class restaurants, high-end shops, casinos, and narrow cobbled streets. Horse drawn sleighs carry tourists around town and a ski bus provides service to the slopes.

The "Espace Mont Blanc" domain is a whopping 445 Km
and with over 111 lifts make Megeve and partner ski areas (la Giettaz, Saint Gervais, Saint Nicolas de Veroce, Combloux, les Contamines Montjoie and Cordon) in the top 6 longest skiable areas in France.

Happy Birthday To You

Do you remember your 5th birthday? Not many of us do - unless your clever Dad filmed the occasion with sound! Celebrating your birthday with a party is a relatively new tradition. In the distant past, people did not record the exact date of a birth so the day could not be celebrated even if they wanted to.

What is fairly certain is that in pre-Christian times it was thought that individuals were more vulnerable to attack from evil spirits on their 'birth day'. So to drive away the evil spirits everyone gathered together to celebrate the occasion with much laughter and happiness.

The song 'Happy Birthday to You' was written in 1893 by two American teachers, Mildred J. Hill and Dr Patty Smith Hill. The original lyrics were 'Good Morning to You'.

In 1988 the rights of the song were sold to Warner Communications for an estimated $25 million. The birthday tradition is now celebrated around the world with customs as varied as our cultures.

The CND Symbol

The CND symbol, shown here at the beginning of the video was created by the British designer Gerald Holtom. He believed that the anti-nuclear movement needed a symbol to unite the cause of nuclear disarmament and explained that the three lines in a circle was to represent 'a human being in despair'.

The first public viewing of the symbol was during the fifty mile march from London's Trafalgar Square to the weapons factory at Aldermaston in 1958. Since then, the now familiar icon has become an international sign of peace, appearing in demonstrations and political marches around the world from Vietnam anti-war protests, at anti- apartheid marches, environmental causes and more recently the Iraqi wars.

CND otherwise known as the 'Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament' never registered the sign as a trademark, stating that it is 'a symbol of freedom and it is free for all'.

Boat Race

It could be annual world cheese rolling contest near the village of Stilton or the world snail racing championships in Congham but there is no doubt that the British love eccentric competitive sports as shown in this film. Some are charity events and others like the 'Dunmoe Flitch' have been handed down through the generations, maintaining historic connections or pastimes. An unusual event is held annually in the village of Witcham in Cambridgeshire - the world pea shooting championship is all down to how accurate your aim is, not distance and is held as a fund raiser for the village hall. In Wells the annual Moat Boat Race is a fun event where thousands watch as teams compete for charity. The teams make the rafts out of tyres and barrels and race them on the moat outside the Bishops Palace.
